Privacy policy
Last updated: 10 July 2026
Free Tax Returns (“we”, “us”, “our”) provides an independent, educational Australian tax-deduction worksheet. This policy explains what personal information we collect when you use our website and services, how we use and protect it, and the choices available to you. We handle personal information in line with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).
We are an independent service. We are not affiliated with, or endorsed by, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), myGov or any government agency. We do not lodge tax returns on your behalf, and we do not provide personal tax, accounting or financial advice.
1. Information we collect
We collect the following categories of personal information:
Information you give us. When you complete our worksheet questionnaire, request a call-back, contact us, refer a friend or claim a referral reward, you may provide:
- Your name and contact details, including email address and mobile number;
- Basic profile details such as your date of birth, sex, postcode/state, occupation and work arrangement;
- General financial and household information you choose to enter — for example your income range, whether you hold private health cover, dependants, relationship/living situation and estimates of certain everyday expenses;
- Messages, enquiries and any other information you send to us;
- For our referral program: the name and contact details of a friend you choose to refer, and — only where you claim a reward — the bank account details needed to pay it.
Worksheet information. The deduction figures and notes you enter in the worksheet may be saved — including on our servers — so you can return to them, and synced to your account across your devices if you sign in. Please only enter information you are comfortable providing.
Account information. If you create an account, we store the details needed to sign you in and secure your account, such as your email address, mobile number and one-time verification codes.
Information we collect automatically. Like most websites, we and our service providers may collect limited technical information — such as your device and browser type, approximate location, pages viewed, and referral/campaign details (for example how you arrived at our site). Some of this is collected using cookies and similar technologies (see section 6).
2. How we use your information
We use personal information to:
- Provide, operate and improve the worksheet and related services;
- Create and secure your account and verify your identity when you sign in;
- Respond to your enquiries, provide support, and follow up about your worksheet or a call-back you requested;
- Operate the referral program and process any rewards;
- Send you service and, where permitted, informational or promotional messages — you can opt out of promotional messages at any time;
- Maintain the security and integrity of our services, prevent misuse and fraud, and meet our legal obligations.
3. Consent
Where we collect personal information through the worksheet questionnaire, we ask you to confirm that you agree to the collection and use of your details as described in this policy. You do not have to provide the information we request, but if you don’t, we may be unable to provide some features. You can withdraw your consent or ask us to stop contacting you at any time using the details in section 10.
4. Disclosure of your information
We do not sell your personal information. We may share it in limited circumstances:
- Service providers. We use trusted third parties to help us run the service — for example email delivery, SMS/messaging, website hosting, security and anti-spam protection, and privacy-conscious analytics. These providers may only use your information to perform services for us.
- Legal reasons. Where required or permitted by law, or to protect our rights, users or the public.
- Business transfers. In connection with a business restructure, sale or similar transaction, subject to appropriate protections.
Some of our service providers may store or process information on servers located outside Australia. Where that occurs, we take reasonable steps to ensure your information is handled consistently with this policy and applicable law.
5. How we protect your information
We take the security of your information seriously and use a range of technical and organisational measures to protect it. Particularly sensitive fields — such as mobile numbers and any bank account details — are encrypted when stored, access to personal information is restricted to authorised personnel, and access to sensitive records is logged. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your information using industry-standard safeguards.
6. Cookies and analytics
We aim to keep tracking to a minimum. We use cookies and similar technologies only where needed to operate the site and, where enabled, to understand aggregate usage through a privacy-conscious analytics tool that does not build advertising profiles of you. Your browser may also store some worksheet data locally on your own device so your progress isn’t lost. You can control or clear cookies and local storage through your browser settings, though some features may not work as intended if you do.
We do not display third-party advertising networks or trackers.
7. How long we keep your information
We keep personal information only for as long as we reasonably need it for the purposes described in this policy, or as required by law. Records that are no longer needed are removed or de-identified on a periodic basis. You may ask us to delete your information as described below, subject to any legal record-keeping obligations.
8. Your rights and choices
You may, at any time:
- Request access to the personal information we hold about you;
- Ask us to correct information that is inaccurate or out of date;
- Ask us to delete your information or close your account;
- Opt out of promotional messages.
To make a request, contact us using the details in section 10. We will respond within a reasonable time. If you are not satisfied with how we handle a privacy concern, you may also contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au.
9. Children
Our services are intended for adults and are not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has provided us information, please contact us so we can remove it.

11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above. Significant changes will be communicated where appropriate. Please review this page periodically.
